| Catnip and the Cat |
[31 Aug 2009|05:50pm] |
Gave my cat a pinch of catnip today (human grade for tea). It's the first time she's ever had the stuff. She's pretty old (about 13) so I wasn't surprised that she didn't go all hyper. However, after she licked it up she promply passed out in her spot. She doesn't even arch when I pet her, just flick her tail or ear a little.
So cute!

Do authors read their own works? Do playwrights listen to their own dialogue? If not then they should start. Abysmal dialogue paired with little to no acting has left me less than pleased with Sophie Tonneau's "I will Always be There to Kill You." This performance, now playing at the Hamilton Fringe Fest, is a 60 mins dissertation in audience torture.
The entire performance plays like a strange dream. A young woman tired of life, for some inscrutable reason, has decided to hire someone to kill her. Only she hasn't really. Rather the play begins and plays out in a muddled fashion where no one seems to know why they are doing the things they are. No one reacts realistically to the absurd situations they find themselves in. Rather the playwright has placed two people in a ridiculous situation with no reason to stay. It is clear from the portrayal of the actors that they are aware of this as well. The play can never decide if it wants to be funny, sweet or sad. Instead, the audience is subjected to never ending mood swings that never quite make sense.
There are only two characters, but the audience never really gets to know either of them. The dialogue and the actions never quite match up.The actor who plays Simon, the unfortunate man who answered the ad, sounds like a man taken from the audience who has been thrust on stage and asked to act. It is often painful to watch and it seems that the only reason he stays in this situation is because the script says he must.
What most surprised me was the random sexism Simon would spout. If Simon was making a joke or showed a tendency towards sexism I could buy it. However, it is too random and never fits with what the discussion was about. It is like the author was creating a parody of a man and would randomly add all the aspects she assumed a man should have. Likes to fix things? Check. Is unkempt and dirty? Check. Is a sexist pig? Check and double check! This would go a long way to explain why Simon is the most two dimensional character in the play.
All in all a most disappointing way to spend an evening.

Burnt...badly |

After a 19hr show call, I was severely bruised and dangerously burnt by the horrible sun. By the end I was so exhausted and sick that I didn't want to even move the last box of clag, but everything was made better by the REALLY nice Krispy Kreme delivery guy who gave us little boxes of doughnut holes...
Nothing really hurts when you have deliciousness!
